In the latter half of the course we’ll use these theories, or “ways of understanding”, to research case studies of AFNs. Using sociological, economic, and critical theories we are going to evaluate the promise and limitations of AFNs to create more sustainable and just food techniques. Readings shall be drawn from the fields of financial geography, rural sociology, organizational principle, neighborhood improvement, political economy and significant principle. It is linked to the rejection of food manufacturing by large firms in favour of various small-scale producers. Local food networks seek to create communities of producers and consumers of local food and to help native food initiatives. Such initiatives embody farmers’ markets, local bakeries and butchers, CSA and box schemes, metropolis farms and allotments, and the encouraging of local sourcing of food in pubs and restaurants.
